Vote for the National Tree Farmers of the Year

I imagine you and a lot of Colorado's Tree Farmers get these emails from ATFS (about voting for National Tree Farmer of the Year).  I am really sad to see that our western Tree Farms and Farmers don't get the recognition that we all deserve.  

Even the Woodlands quarterly magazine has very little to say about our region.  Everything is all about the hardwoods Farms of the east, north and south.  Very little is said about the Rocky Mountains and our pine trees.  

And these folks from Montana are losing the voting to the other 3 regions.

What do you say we get our Colorado Tree Farmers to vote for the Hoiland family?  Get some solidarity going for us in the West!

Editor's Note:

All four nominees for National Tree Farmer of the Year are worthy contenders for the honor. However, there does seem to be a lot more people out east who are voting for the nominees in their region, and those votes may very well influence who gets selected.

If after reviewing the stories of all the nominees, you think that the Hoilands from Montana deserve a little more consideration for their efforts than they seem to be getting, please consider placing your own vote.

Of course, it's not as if the pride and reputations of all Tree Farmers in the western region are at stake or anything. ;o)

Southwest Colorado Logger Recognized as Logger of the Year

DEL NORTE, Colo. – Del Norte logger Michael Rue has received the 2015 Colorado Outstanding Log-ger of the Year Award for outstanding timber harvesting efforts in southwest Colorado. The award is of-fered through the Colorado State Tree Farm Committee, which is an affiliate of the American Tree Farm System, and the Colorado Timber Industry Association (CTIA).

Rue operates Del Norte-based Michael Rue Logging, which for 34 years has harvested timber and provid-ed logging services on federal, state, tribal and private forestlands in southwest Colorado. He was present-ed the award at a joint meeting of the Colorado-Wyoming Society of American Foresters, CTIA and Col-orado Tree Farmers held in Glenwood Springs on May 8.

Forest Products: From Marking to Market

WHAT: Participants will be provided a copy of a recent publication developed in partnership by the Colorado State Forest Service and Colorado State Tree Farm Committee. “Forest Products: From Marking to Market” is a guide to provide forest landowners the information and tools they need to help them successfully implement forest stewardship activities utilizing contracted services.
WHERE: Ken & Lois Carpenter, Pine Song Tree Farm, located north of Bayfield below Vallecito Lake Dam at 12758 County Road 501, Bayfield, CO 81122. Look for the Tree Farm sign on the east side of County Road 501. (A special THANK YOU to Ken & Lois for hosting this event!)
WHEN: Friday, July 24th, 9 a.m -11:30 a.m.
This meeting will focus on the steps a landowner can take to set-up and implement a forest products sale or service agreement. From preliminary planning of a project activity to contract development and administration, participants will learn to engage themselves in the process and learn tips to market their forestry activities and related wood products.
